Prof. Dr. med. B. Klosterhalfen studierte von 1982 bis 1988 Humanmedizin an der RWTH-Aachen. Es folgten die Promotion 1989, sowie AIP und Assistenzarztjahre in der Pathologie und Chirurgie in den Jahren 1989 bis 1993. Im Jahr 1998 erfolgte die Anerkennung als Facharzt für Pathologie sowie die Erlangung der Venia legendi für das Fach Pathologie and anatomische Pathologie. Anerkennung der fakultativen Weiterbildung Molekularpathologie im Jahr 2002. Bis 3/2003 Tätigkeit als Oberarzt in Aachen, seit 4/2003 in leitender Stellung am Institut für Pathologie in Düren. Seit 2/2007 Chefarzt für Pathologie am Krankenhaus Düren sowie geschäftsführender Arzt der dort ansässigen Praxisgemeinschaft. Zwischen 1993 und 2003 erfolgte eine breit gefächerte Ausbildung in der allgemeinen und speziellen Pathologie mit Schwerpunkten in der Mamma- und Uropathologie, der Gastroenteropathologie sowie der Pathologie des Bewegungsapparates. Auch in Düren werden diese Schwerpunkte und die Molekularpathologie im besonderen Maße von Prof. Klosterhalfen vertreten. Wissenschaftlichen Schwerpunkte bildeten vor allem funktionelle Tierstudien auf dem Gebiet der Intensivmedizin unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Sepsis und der Ischämie, in vitro Studien zur Pathogenese verschiedener Tumoren, sowie die Biomaterialforschung. Die Biomaterialforschung ist heute ein wesentlicher Schwerpunkt der wissenschaftlichen Aktivitäten am Institut für Pathologie in Düren. Ermöglicht wird dies durch enge Kooperationen mit verschiedenen Partnern aus Industrie und Hochschule (siehe auch Biomaterialforschung), insbesondere der Firmen BMP GmbH, Bayer AG, Ethicon GmbH, Braun Melsungen, FEG Textiltechnik (u.a.) und der RWTH Aachen. Im Rahmen der Kooperation mit der Fa. BMP GmbH in Aachen leitet Prof. Dr. med. B. Klosterhalfen das einzige in Deutschland zertifizierte und akkreditierte pathologische Labor für die Testung und Zulassung von Biowerkstoffen, Implantaten und Medizinprodukten. Prof. Dr. med. B. Klosterhalfen ist seit 1986 Autor und Coautor von über 200 Publikationen und über 300 Vorträgen, Gewinner zahlreicher Preise auf dem Gebiet der Intensivmedizin und Biomaterialforschung sowie Inhaber verschiedenster Patente. Er ist Mitglied verschiedener Gesellschaften auf dem Gebieten der Pathologie, Intensivmedizin und Biomaterialforschung, Reviewer zahlreicher nationaler und internationaler Fachzeitschriften sowie Editor des Journals Expert Reviews of Medical Devices.
